George Weah: Not just the 24th President of Liberia

George Tawlon Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah, on January 22, 2018, was sworned in as the 24th elected President of Liberia.

Following his retirement from active professional football career, he became involved in politics in his home country Liberia, and in 2005 contested for presidency but lost to the eventual first African female President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

In the 2011 election, again Weah ran unsuccessfully as Vice President alongside Winston Tubman.

But the most fascinating side of Oppong was seen largely in his humble stride to strengthen his perceive handicap for leadership; weak educational background.

Despite attaining the zenith of success in his football career, having won the FIFA Best Player and the Ballon d’Or Award, he contested for presidency in 2005 as a High School dropout. For this George was ridiculed by his opponents.

Did he give up? George Oppong Weah got fired up. And below was what happened about 2005 election;

In 2006, he obtained his SSCE,

In 2011, he batched his first degree,

In 2013, he obtained the Masters degree

No man who mastered the art of self – evaluation can ever be a failure in life. In 2014, he restrategized and contested for and won election into the Liberian Senate for Montserrado County.

In December 2017, Weah won the Liberian Presidential election through a run-off  by over 60%.

Today political and social commentators world over including his critics described Weah as a shining light, jinx-breaker and inspiration for every aspiring African youth.
