EbonyLife Films’ Chief Daddy closed its 2018 record-breaking run with an astounding N235,469,368 – the highest box-office total for a Nigerian film in 2018 and the third-highest-grossing Nollywood movie of all time. The Niyi Akinmolayan film overtook King of Boys and squeezed past Merry Men, the 5th and 4th on the list of highest-grossing films, and into third place behind The Wedding Party and The Wedding Party 2. This amazing feat makes EbonyLife Films a producer of all three movies at the top of the all-time box office chart.
The emergence of Chief Daddy capped the end of a remarkable year for Nollywood, despite a slow start, in which three films went beyond the N200 million barrier, a feat only achieved by the Wedding Party movies in 2016 and 2017. Ayodeji ‘AY’ Makun had his biggest hit to date with the dramatic comedy, Merry Men, that posted N235.2 million by the end of its run. Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys was the second big Nollywood movie of 2018, scoring over N220 million. Also, it was a landmark year for Niyi Akinmolayan, who directed two films,The Wedding Party 2 and Chief Daddy, that gained no.1 status in the same year.
One interesting aspect of Chief Daddy’s performance over the holidays was that, despite Aquaman posting higher revenues due to higher ticket prices for its 3D and IMAX screenings, many more viewers went to seeChief Daddy, making it the most-watched movie for the season.
The Niyi Akinmolayan film opened in cinemas on Friday, December 14th and has maintained the number oneposition for local movies since then, despite competing with a strong lineup of holiday releases. And Chief Daddy is off to a bright start for 2019, with revenues over N14 million on New Year’s Day, taking it to N250,260,945 in total.
Moses Babatope, COO of FilmOne Distribution is pleased with the film’s performance. “Our overall goal forChief Daddy was N200 million, given the glut of releases on the December schedule, but it reached the target in just 16 days. It has exceeded our expectations, making it one of a handful of films that have made 2018 an outstanding year for Nollywood.”
Mo Abudu, Executive Producer, is excited about her film’s trajectory. “We knew Chief Daddy would do well but it has outperformed our projections. It’s a little reminiscent of the early days of The Wedding Party, when all the shows were selling out but we had no idea how far the film would go. I have to give credit to our amazing cast, who gave so much time and energy to meeting fans at cinemas all over Nigeria and in Accra – we couldn’t have done this without them.”
Chief Daddy is still showing in cinemas across Nigeria and at Silverbird cinemas in Accra, Ghana.

Senator Dino Melaye’s younger brother, Moses, has accused the Federal Government of using the police to turn the Senator’s life into a nightmare. His assertion comes as the police continues to lay a siege outside Melaye’s home in Abuja.
Recall that on Friday December 28th 2018, the police stormed Melaye’s Abuja home with the aim of arresting him over an alleged murder case. The embattled senator and his men have been accused of attempting to murder a police officer in Kogi state in July 2018. Read here.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV last night, January 2nd, Moses Melaye said the police have made life unbearable for his brother since they started the siege outside his home and that his family believe the police is out to harm him.
“This government and the police have made the life of my brother, Senator Dino Melaye, a living hell for the last few months. The case they are raising against him happened in July. I was there in the car; the policemen shot at us. My car had over six bullets riddled on that car. How can they turn around all of a sudden that we are the ones shooting at the police?
“Our security men and policemen have been taken away since over seven-eight months ago. So, how do we now become the persons shooting? That story is not true. It is unfounded and because of the injustice on a daily basis, we cannot trust or believe anything they do. I believe that they are out to harm my brother. If not, what is the desperation?” he said
Narrating how the police stormed Melaye’s Abuja home on December 28th, Moses said
“On this particular occasion, they went into the compound, arrested the security man, beat him up and cuffed him” he said
Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has vowed to continue his efforts to unmask Jubril Aminu Al Sudani, the Sudanese man who he claims is currently replacing President Buhari in the presidential villa.
In a video he posted on social media to wish his followers a Happy 2019, Kanu who went missing in September 2017 and resurfaced in Israel in October 2018, said the worst days for the secessionist group were over and that 2019 promises to be appointed year of Biafran independence.
In the video, Kanu vowed to ensure that activities in ”Biafra land” will be grounded during the presidential election
“The unmasking of Jubril Aminu Al Sudani the fake Nigerian President will continue unabated. By the time we are done with him and his handlers, Luggard will become truly ashamed of what he created. I would like to see Nigerians participate in elections where one of the names on the ballot paper is a dead man.
This shame and humiliation is one that will never leave Nigeria as it heads ingloriously towards self destruction.
We understand the enemy has announced yet another round of Fulani military invasion of our land in the name of Operation Python Dance, no doubt to help facilitate the rigging of elections for Jubril Al Sudani and the cronies of Fulani Cabal across Nigeria. What I said previously still stand and there is no going back. Chukwu Okike Abiama is my witness that any reported shooting or killing of any Biafran by this Fulani Janjaweed Army of Nigeria will be avenged” he said.
